WWII US Navy Brothers Lot Guadalcanal And USS Missouri Veterans

$200.00

The Sullivan Brothers both served in the Unites States Navy During WW2.

Joe Was aboard the USS Missouri during the surrender of Japan. (Photos from Joe of the surrender included in the lot) Joe spent many years under the command of his friend and famous four star Admiral James L. Holloway Jr. who even gave Joe a nick name “The Risk Ambassador” Joe continued to serve after the war on the U.S.S. Des Moines. The Moines was a state of the art Heavy Cruiser and the first to feature the auto loading Mark 16 8” 55 caliber gun.

Charles served on Guadalcanal and sent many letters home during his service that are included in the lot. In these letters were some photos of him on Guadalcanal and some very gruesome photos of dead Japanese soldiers. Written on the back of one of the photos of dead Japanese soldiers Charles wrote “He’s finished ha ha. Dec 2, 42”.

Included in the lot is a 8x10” autographed portrait of Vice Admiral Allen E Smith dedicated to Mrs. Sullivan. I’m not sure of the connection but one of the brothers served under him. Vice Admiral Smith fought in WW1, WW2 and the Korean War. During WW1 he commanded the after turret of the USS New Kork and witnessed the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet in 1918. In WW2 he commanded the Battleship South Dakota and sunk 12 enemy ships!

This lot is a very interesting glimpse into the life of two brothers with amazing military careers during a very historically important time. There is so much to read and lots of research to be done. I hope it finds a good home I know it will keep you busy!
